Varnish
Epifanes Clear (Gloss) Varnish |
|
|
We now provide Epifanes varnish in our kits. This is a high quality varnish made in the Netherlands.
This spar varnish produces an extremely high
gloss, applies readily by brushing or spraying,
and has high UV inhibitor protection. We have
found this varnish to be reasonably easy to use;
it has great flow out characteristics. You
actually get more for your money here because
the one liter gives you more material than a
quart. You should thin this varnish with the
Epifanes Thinner listed below. This will reduce
the viscosity so that your brush marks will flow
out within 20 minutes or so. It should take about
two liters of varnish to apply four coats to a
tandem canoe, 17' solo kayak or rowing boat;
solo canoes will use less, probably a liter.

Epifanes Matte Varnish |
|
|
We typically use this matte version for the INSIDE of our canoes, kayaks or rowing boats over two coats of the Epifanes Gloss Varnish above

Another addition to the Epifanes family of varnishes:

Epifanes Rapidclear provides an enhancing, U.V. protecting film. It bonds extremely well to teak and other oily woods, preventing discoloration and emphasizes the natural grain of the wood. NO SANDING BETWEEN COATS, excellent water resistance and flexibility. Rapidclear can be applied every 5-6 hours. Four to five coats are sufficient under most conditions. Easy touch up and maintenance.
This is a semi-gloss varnish that has a much lower viscosity than the Epifanes Clear Gloss at the top of this page. No thinning is necessary with this material.

This is a polyurethane varnish with fewer UV
inhibitors than the CLEAR Varnish above. We like
to use the Matte on the inside hull of our
canoes and Rangeley Lake Boats when we leave the
coarse "cloth" coat of fiberglass. Application
of this material is VERY easy and forgiving; the
Matte dries to a dull flat finish that hides the
little variations on your inner hull that you
would rather not see. Another use is for the
inside of the strip or stitch n glue kayaks.
This varnish dulls the gloss and gives you a
very professional looking interior. Make sure
you stir thoroughly to get the flattening agent
evenly distributed in the mix.
We recommend thinning your varnish with the
thinner that was developed for it. This means
thinner and varnish will be compatible with each
other and will produce predictable results.
Using another brand of mineral spirits only
introduces another variable into the chemical
equation. Available in half-liter.
Easy Flow works better than the thinner listed above. Although it
is more expensive it has a wider range of uses. It can be used with
oil base varnish or paint. When used with Epifanes Classic Gloss
in the proper ratios, it will allow the varnish to flow out like
you have never experienced before. This will extend your wet edge
time and reduce or eliminate the possibility of lap or brush marks.
Do not use with Rapidclear (below) as Rapidclear does NOT need to
be thinned or reduced. Available in liters only.
