North Star
Outstanding Fast Expedition Sea Kayak with a Split Bow

North Star is inspired by the baidarka kayaks of the Aleut Eskimos of Alaska. Rob Macks designed North Star to retain the excellent handling qualities of this native design and have added features for the recreational paddler.

North Star is 20" at the 4" waterline. This long narrow rounded hull is very fast. Volume is carried far forward and aft on this design. This volume gives the North Star exceptional secondary stability. The bifurcated bow along with the volume make this sea kayak ideally suited to big open waters. The North Star rides over waves rather punching through them for a drier ride.

Length 18' 4" | Beam 22-1/2" | Weight 46 lbs.

North Star also surfs waves incredibly well. The fixed rudder makes North Star track very well even in strong cross winds. The fore 1/3 of the keel is highly rockered and the design of the bow and the high volume of the fore hull keep the bow from burying in waves while surfing. The vertical swept sides of the rudder create a surface that is also an asset in surfing. One of the hardest parts of surfing is catching the wave. The stern surface of the baidarka gets a push from braking waves to help you catch the wave. "This design has the most volume of any solo sea kayak available, making it THE outstanding expedition kayak," says Designer Rob Macks. "This is the most versatile kayak I have ever seen. This is one fast beautiful sea kayak. North Star is my favorite!"
